Why do people who have major surgery have depression afterwards?
By
Question: My father just had heart surgery and the nurses and drs told us to watch out for depression in the next couple of weeks. He was in good spirits before and after, but now he’s starting to get depressed.
Is it biological, psychological, or both? I can understand how stressful major surgery is, but I would think people would be happy that it was over and they pulled through alright. Is it caused by hormones or something?
Thx in advance for the answers.

Most of the problems is from the anesthesia and should pass after 4 to 6 weeks.

Well, they’ve done studies on it ,but from what i’ve found no one really knows why patients who undergo major surgery have postoperative depression.
