What things should you consider when choosing a primary care doctor?
By
Question: Would you recommend a woman using a OBGYN as a primary care doctor (I am doing open enrollment selections for my health insurance at work). Why is this good? Why not?

This is good because OBGYN’s are especially doctors for women and women problems. You should consider your own feelings too: do you want a male doctor, or a female doctor? Which gender would you feel more comfortable with?

No I would not use a GYN as a primary doctor and I am a woman. GYN are specialist and they only concentrate on the female organs of the body.
Find yourself a good family practice primary doctor. He can even take care of your GYN needs if you are not pregnant like PAP smears, yearly checkups and birth control.. But they can also take care of you when you need antibiotics, flu shots and anything else. It is also a lot easier to get an appointment fast with a family practice doctor than with a specialist
Good Luck

I think a person should choose a Physician they feel comfortable with, be it male or female. I’ve had male Gyno Doctor’s before that were just as good as a female. But, if you are at all embarrased or feel modest, I’d go with a woman. Just knowing a female has the same equipment and possibly has gone through many of the things she treats is comforting to alot of women. Now, as far as using a female Gynecologist as a Primary Physician, I wouldn’t. I personally feel women should have both. There are many ailments not related to your Gynecologic needs that a regular Doctor has come across and perhaps may be better able to treat. But of course the choice is yours!
