“We didn’t truly know the dangers of the market, because it was a dark market,” says Brooksley Born, the head of the CFTC, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, who not only warned of the potential for economic meltdown in the late 1990s, but also tried to convince the country’s key economic powerbrokers to take actions that could have helped avert the crisis.
“They were totally opposed to it,” Born says. “That puzzled me. What was it that was in this market that had to be hidden?” Frontline

The 2008 meltdown could have been totally prevented, but in 1998 Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan, Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, and lacky Larry Summers conspired to prevent proper regulation of Wall Street, banks, and the derivative market.
Brooksley Born, head of the CFTC, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, specifically WARNED of the coming disaster and tried to impose regulations but was stopped by the three stooges.

Latest CBS Poll 9/25/09: 65% of all Americans, including a majority of Republicans, support a Public Healthcare Option.
Congressmen who don’t support a Public Option are just paid schills for the Health Insurance and Drug companies.

You’re right, we pay about $6,000/person, about twice as much per capita as other industrialized countries.

Thanks Rachel for keeping the heat on this issue. We have some of the worst health care in the world yet pay the most per capita for it.
If a Government run health care option forces big insurance to be more competitive, I support it. Insurance has become “license to steal” as one of my accounting professors aptly put it.
@ dfwtexxaas -Military insurance is a benefit, but it’s hardly free considering the pay they get.

Our Military uses a Government-Run Health Care System and it’s totally free for our Troops. If it’s good enough for our Soldiers, it’s good enough for me. Oh yeah, it’s also totally free!
