Question about this health care bill?
By
Question: So it Just passed in the house with a simple majority, 220-215. But in the senate it needs 60 votes. Just wondering, why not 51 for a simple majority, like the house? I always assumed that a simple majority plus a presidents signature equals law.
So is it true that 59-41 in favor wouldn’t pass it?

That is correct…. 59 votes won’t pass. We can only pray they get no more than 59 votes.

It is DOA in the senate. You have 14 conservative dems against it, all the republicans against and Joe Lieberman. Reid has already conceded that he MUST have ALL dems plus Lieberman to get it. Lieberman has already told him that the public option is either gone or the bill is. So its finished

It need 60 votes override the minority objection to bring it onto the floor and to propose amendments and debate the issue. All amendments will have a up or down vote, more that 51 votes and the amendment is adopted. After that it will only take 51 votes to pass the bill as a whole.
