My mother has learned that she has a rare form of Diverticulitis.?

By Editor

Question: My mother has learned that she has a rare form of Diverticulitis. She has a fistula running from her bladder to her colon. One in a million people are known to get this. Other words that have been said are “sygmoid” and “colectomy”. I have not looked these up yet.

Surgery has been recommended. The surgery would take 2-3 hours if there are no complications. She would be on a respirator for the surgery and if there are no complications she would be removed from it before waking. Her hospital stay would be between 6-9 days and her recovery at home would take as long as three months. She would feel quite weak and overly tired for that time frame.

During the surgery she would have an epidural and it would remain in her back for four days. She would be on a feeding tube for four days. Walking every day is part of the recovery process.

If she does not have the surgery she would run the risk of getting a serious infection, that would require emergency surgery and a reconstruction surgery afterwards.

My head is spinning. If you have any knowledge regarding this procedure please let me know.

Thanks so much,
Sandy

Sandy right on, it is a required surgery because she will get a terrible infection if the surgery is not done and will die. They will put a colostomy in for a while until the surgery heals and then maybe reverse it later. All of what you have said is the same procedure for having an appendix out ie a respirator during surgery. The epidural is no big deal either and will actually be a god-send since it will allow her to be in little pain. if you have any exact question feel free to email me.
hope the surgery goes as planned.
