My dog was hit by a car and was given unkown surgery, what are the general costs?
By
Question: My dog was recently hit by a car and taken away by the dog catchers. I feel terrible about it. They just left a note on my door saying he had been taken. They didn’t say anything about him getting hit by a car or anything. The next day they say he’s in the hospital and was given surgery. They also say he had worms. What kind of surgery would he be given and what are some general pet surgery costs?
I called the dog catcher first, that’s how I found out that he had been taken away. But the first day I called the dog catcher, they weren’t there. The next day, they had taken the day off and the other people there didn’t know what happened with my dog. Then the THIRD day after the note had been left at my house I was told about my dog having a surgery. Then when I called the vet, the doctor was out for the day, that was today. And the secretary there didn’t know what surgeries my dog had been given, or if he was alright. And my dog broke off of his leash, that’s how he got away in the first place. So that’s the rest of the story, so far. I’m not an evil person, I’m just asking about a specific aspect of what’s going on with my dog. I don’t spill my heart out when I’m asking a question about THIS aspect of this terrible incident. I feel bad, trust me, I love my dog. I’ve had him for about 5 years now. Thanks for all the kind responses so far.
Also, the person that hit my dog got away. I was out at school that day and the dog catcher found my dog on the side of the road near my house. But whoever hit him got away…
Also, since I can’t go see him now because the doctor isn’t there, this is my only way of finding out what’s going on with him–through these answers. I would go see him but I can’t. I’m worried terribly about this but I can’t go see him since the doctor’s not there ![]()
BTW, his name is “Happy” for anyone who’s wondering.

You could be looking at 100s of dollars. How did your dog get loose?

Well it depends on what kind of surgery it was,but surgerys can get very very very very very expensive!!!!!!!!!! he could have had a leg sugery meaning opening the leg and applying screws to hold the bone in place or they might have had to put a plate in.

it depends on the Vet, the degree of the injuries and recovery time. your cost could be from 500.00 to a couple thousand.

hi
im not sure if you work in pounds or whatever but…..
Its difficult to say depends on what was wrong with him, what the surgery was and how big he is.
I can give you a couple of rough prices in english pounds:
Injections £4-9
Hospitalisation cost £25-30
Ops can range from £150-700 depends what he has had done.
X-rays are about £70 each.
All the prices ive given are for a private surgery
VERY difficult to tell you a price you need to find out what he has had done.

if they left you a NOTE, why the hell didn’t you go see the vet or CALL the vet who did the surgery—I mean it’s OBVIOUS they knew it was your dog…. and why was he out wandering and not on a leash or in a fenced back yard at the time..? Poor dog ownership if you ask me. Dog surgeries can be VERY VERY expensive…. and the medicines after are costly—-AND YOUR RESPONSIBILITY…. have you even ASKED the doctor what surgery was given??? Why the hell didn’t you at LEAST call the DOG CATCHER once you got the note—you obviously don’t care at ALL about that poor dog–I think you should PAY the vet bill and then give the dog up for adoption….. and how didn’t you know that the dog had WORMS???? If you were even the SLIGHTEST bit aware of the dog’s presence, you HAD to know he had symptoms of worms or are you THAT DENSE???????

If its unknown, it was probably exploratory surgery. I believe sometimes they do it just to get your money…Ask them if they xrayed first, then ask why they did surgery…See what they say..Usually xrays are done first, then if something shows up..then surgery. Its going to be expensive..Im guessing over a 1,000. dont be surprised by the bill…Hope he gets better.

You are a very poor excuse for an animal owner. WHY haven’t you called to check on your dog’s condition and get all the details of what they know??!
In one sentence you say, “my dog was recently hit by a car”. In another sentence you say, ” They didn’t say anything about him getting hit by a car or anything.” Did the dog get hit or not? Was it your fault? Did you allow the dog out on his own?
There is no reason why you have not checked this out unless you are to blame for what happened. And if you are, they evidently know where you live so they will return to question you.
You should just sign the dog over to them so they can place him in a good home. Anyone that cares more about the cost of an accident that injures their dog doesn’t care about the dog. If you were taking care of the poor guy this would not have happened and he would not have worms either!!!
If that happened to one of my dogs I would have been there in a heartbeat and holding his little paw begging them to let me take him home.

Really depends on the surgery. You need to get a hold of the vet. You need more details.

In addition to all the other answers…You could be sued for the damage to the drivers car too!
