Mental Health Liberation and Anti-Psychiatry Movement Part 1

By Editor

Description: Dr. John Breeding, Ph.D. Psychologist talks about the mental health liberation movement, the anti-psychiatry movement, the movement against psychiatric oppression. Sometimes seen as antipsych or antipsychiary or anti-biological psychiatry. This is a movement made up mostly of ex-mental health consumers and the family members of ex-mental health consumers who feel they have been damaged by psychiatry. These people refer to themselves as psychiatric survivors. There are also several medical …

Don’t be fooled by the ph.D. Doctor, most psychiatric survivors, like me, know that whilst some of what is said has some connection with the truth, this is just a front for the nonsense Church of Scientology. The care and treatment of mental ill health do not have to be oppressive and there are many well intentioned mental health professionals out there. Meds are ok if they work for you and the positives outweigh any negative, so called side effects. This group hijacks the real surv movement

i agree on alot of it. big business has been greedy. some people need to be on meds though. the meds alone will not treat solely alone takes absinenance from narcs and alcohol. also diet exercise play together with the medication.

3

Although I generally follow the psychiatry line, I find you extremely interesting and impossible not to listen to, even though I often don’t agree.

4

im glad that this is “humorous” to you…it wasnt very humorous when i was forced to take drugs that caused damage to my body or when my freedom was taken away and i was locked into restraint chairs..that wasnt very humorous to me

yeah, whats your fucking point

6

I believe… idiocy or greed may be a direct cause of much of it. An intelligent psychiatrist should actually recognize that many things diagnosed as proclaimed ” mental disorders” can be, in my opinion, efficently -cured- by psychological treatments. Of whatever sort.

To claim that psychiatrist are intentionally working to supress the people of a nation, etc is a bit…humorous to me, if not plainly silly. They believe they are aiding by supressing something to such a degree it is out ofmind

7

You realize psychology and psychiatry both begin with the three letters “psy”, correct?

8

A) Lying to the medical profession. . This includes giving a false history, tampering with drug tests, lying about disability to receive benefits, misleading court officials to receive more lenient sentences, and so on.

my psychiatrist doesn’t even care about me. He just gets payed a lot of money to talk to me for 5 minutes and hand me a prescription.

In college I found that doing the opposite of what psychiatrists had told me to do was what would ultimately help me. I don’t know if I was initially misdiagnosed or what, but it turns out that smoking pot didn’t make me psychotic, but seemed to help. same with other psychedelics. I breezed through college, got a degree in english, and explored the far reaches of my mind on a regular basis. However, I will always carry those awful memories of alienation, and will forever distrust psychiatry.

hysteria being what it is, I was diagnosed as bipolar at age 16, received a cocktail of drugs at various times (zyprexa, risperdal, lithium, inderal, cogentin, haldol) that made me a practically narcoleptic zombie unable to do any schoolwork. nobody would listen to me when I told them the side effects were too intense. I failed a year of school, watched my friends and peers go to college, while I, formerly an honors student, degenerated. after stopping the meds, I got into college, graduated.

Breeding’s argument is self contradictory. It was PSYCHOLOGY that said gay isn’t a disease. Initially it did but it was psy which reveresed that. It was PSYCHOLOGY which tells us blacks (slaves, etc) are no different than whites. yes psy has evolved from a racistpassed but psy itself condemned its own past and desperatley now forces these mores on society. ie, gay is normal, blacks are identical to all else, slavery is worng, etc. Breeding must refine his argument

I agree w/ half. He’s got the social manifestations of psy all wrong. Psy no longer wants to opress minorities yet has frantically raced to speed al minorities up to speed on every social scale. This is why the undeserved get colege placement and why criminals are taught that their crimes are not their fault but the fault of mental illness which started b/c of an opressive society. Psy tries to remove all accountability from behavior in order “help” not hinder

14

can I ask what happened to you, im going through the same shit and im looking for other people with similar stories thanks.

15

I hate having to always second guess myself, analyse myself and question my own sanity, just because I choose to think for myself.

16

a psychiatrist once said to me “if you fuck with us, we’re gonna fuck with you.” my life was ruined by psychiatry. i will never be the same again.

17

So, good sir, I must ask, where does one draw the line in regards to arguing about biological vs. physiologic vs. individual perspective/experience? Back to things like Alzheimer’s disease, multi-infarct dementia…where imaging studies and autopsy post morten show diseased tissue in the brain…perhaps we just haven’t gotten to the point of ‘imaging’ all underlying pathologies…..

18

Fascinating! I admire your spunk–and culture, I’ have heard, does play a role in diagnosis….if it is normal for your culture to hear the voices of dead ancestors, it’s ok….but if that is not part of your culture, it’s not….
Kind of reminiscent of what happened with things like testing at Ellis Island, perhaps.

19

How about neurology?
Again, I mention the case of Mr. Gage….

20

Well, good Doctor, you do provide some interesting viewpoints. Now, this video mentions that psychiatry is enforcing the norm. ..by making folks reflect on and evalutate their behavior, aren’t you doing the same?

21

i tied my mum to a bed and fucked her for a week thats what happens when im ill

Anytime anyone talks out agianst psychiatry they are labeled a scientologist. I’m sorry, people are not genetic time bombs predispoed to taking chemcials made by world trade pharma conglomerates. My friend, I think your probably already on drugs. I hope your anti-depressant helps complements your apathy. It is truly sad how brainwashed the world is.

23

I own Gwen Olsen’s book “Confessions of an Rx Drug Pusher.” I never said he was a $cientologist. I was disappointed by the fact that he accepted money from a $cientology front group to speak. He always speaks of total freedom and total free speech. Then go and associate with people who create the allusions of freedom but stifle and oppress their members. I’m really sure Dr. Breeding really is in the dark about what $cientologists do when he associates with them.

24

Nice try.
Anytime anybody isnt for psychiatric drugs, BIG PHARMA labels them a Scientologist so no one will listen to them. BIG PHARMA pays people BIG MONEY to promote the idea that everyone who criticizes them must be a scientologist and therefore crazy.

ablechild is a $cientology front group. Dr. Breeding is cited on their website. He went to speak in New Canaan, CT 2004. “Author John Breeding, Ph.D. Speaks on Natural Parenting without Labels & Drugs, the Role of Psychiatry, and Psychiatric Drugs in Schools. New Caanan Ct. Friday, April 23, 2004.” Quote from ablechild’s website. I always knew there was a link between Dr. Breeding and $cientology…My own opinion, I doubt he flew out there and paid his own accommodations. For shame…
