is psychiatry part of medicine?
By
Question: Like if i study medicine in university which is 8yrs of studying, could i become a psychiatrist when I’m done?? someone told me as long as you graduate from medicine you could be considered as a psychiatrist if you concentrate on that after you graduate. is that true??
we don’t have many universities here so I don’t know what to do, I want psychiatry but it doesn’t exist anywhere here so if i study medicine is psychiatry part of it? or will i need to do other stuff after i graduate in order to become a psychiatrist?

When your done with school and do your residency you can focus more on psych, but every psychiatrist is a MD, if you don’t want to be a MD then you can be a psychologist, they just cant wright scripts.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialized in psychiatry while in medical school. It’s like a cardiologist is a doctor who specialized in the study of the heart during medical school.
While training to be a psychiatrist, you would learn more about brain chemistry, neurology, psychiatric drugs, and the diagnosis of mental disorders than another kind of doctor would. You would have much more expertise in psychiatric medicines than other kinds of doctors would.
That is the way education works in the US. I don’t know where you are from, but if you are interested in a certain university, you should be able to get information from them.
If you are interested mostly in doing psychotherapy (talk therapy), you don’t need to go to medical school. Instead you usually need advanced training in the field of psychology or social work. Again, that is the US system. Your system may be different. I hope this helps.
