Is it possible for a Surgical Tech to work in Orthopedic Surgery/Sports Medicine?
By
Question: Are there positions out there in this area, or mostly just general surgery? I am curious as I have my BS in Kinesiology/Exercise Science with a concentration In Athletic Training. I am interested in Surgical Tech and was wondering what my options are. Thanks!
Unfortunately there isn’t much out there right now for Athletic Training unless you work at a college or high school. I would prefer to work in a clinic or hospital and unfortunately AT’s aren’t recognized like Physical Therapists are, so at this point it is hard for AT’s to find a decent job. However, there is an opportunity as a “Physician Extender” but I have yet to see anything in the Maine area, which is where I am… I need to go a different route right now and this was what I was thinking – Surgical Tech in Sports Medicine/Orthopedic Surgery and maybe get my foot in the door for more… I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

If you have a BS, why would you aspire to a job that requires an AA degree or less? You wouldn’t be using your knowledge at all handing instruments to orthopods. (Surg techs are terrific – I’m not running them down at all, but I doubt it is what you are looking for)
Have you considered going on to PA school? That would give you an excellent opportunity to work side by side with physicians.
There may also be other positions available in a large orthopedic practice that would allow you to put your education to good use.
