How to connect MEDICINE & HISTORY?

Question: For a paper, i’m writing about significant discoveries in AMERICAN medicine form 1800-1950 for a history class. How can i connect these discoveries to history? I was thinking gov response…or population growth? please help?? i already have discoveries like polio vaccine, insulin, etc
