How does Medicaid work when it comes to my newborn?

By Editor

Question: I just got accepted for Medicaid (healthy connections). This is my secondary insurance for myself and will be my baby boys insurance when he arrives. I was told he would be covered for a little while, but in order to recieve his card and him to still be on Medicaid … What do i need to do? Have the hospital fax papers, proof of birth? Or wait until he gets his social security card/birth certificate? I’ve never revieved public health assistance until now and need some help on how to go about medicaid when the baby boy arrives! Thankyou.

once your baby is born just call and let them know they will then tell you want papers you will need to send so that he gets medicaid usually it’s the birth certificate and the s.s number but since that takes a while for the baby to receive a hospital worker usually applies for one once the baby is born and gives you a paper saying that an application was sent for one if they do that with that paper is fine, but like i said just wait until the baby is born to call and find out exactly what they will need for you to send they may work differently where you live, but usually your medicaid will cover your baby i’m not sure if it is for a month or two but i do know they give you time so that you apply for your baby

I was given a temporary medicaid card for my twins before they were born. Then I was told that I could not get their actual card until I get their social security number. I’m still waiting on one of them. But I was told just to bring in their SS card and birth certificate. They’re 3 weeks old now, and I’m still waiting to get the second SS card so that I can get all of that done. They can’t change their names on any of their medical records until I get it, and it’s all very confusing…

call your case worker and ask if you can get an unborn baby medical card. I had one and he was “unknown (my last name)” on the card. once he was born and I submitted information for his birth certificate, I called my case worker and said he was born. they sent me a card with his name on it and I threw out the “unknown” card. my caseworker didn’t require me to submit any paper work because the hospital did it for me. just ask if they need a copy of the birth certificate or social security card in order to get the card with your baby’s name on it. the ‘unknown’ card works for a whole year though, I believe, so you’ve got some time to sort out getting the card with his name on it.
