Do you think its a good idea to legalize marijuana for medical purpose given the potential of abuse from teens
By
Question: Some people have argued that marijuana has medical purpose to treat conditions such as pain, anorexia, and migraine but given the potential for abuse by youth and the possibility of MJ being a gateway drug, should it be legalized at all?

Yes

It does have proven medical benefits, it is not a gateway drug, and yes it should be legalized.
Oh! And no, I don’t smoke it.

Nah, too many people would become lazy slobs, wait too late

ummmmmmmmmm don’t teens abuse it and alcohol now? I know they did when I was a teen. And a lot worse drugs then that.
November 1st, 2009 at 3:53 am
Yes I think it should the same way cigarettes and alcohol are.
November 1st, 2009 at 4:25 am
Marijuana should be legalized…period. Regulate it like alcohol, have the government tax it and the whole stigma attached to it will go away plus the government will make some money on it.
Alcohol is illegal for teens, does that stop them from drinking?
NO

C’mon…it’s just pot!! Gateway drug my ass….I’ve been smoking pot for 30 years and it’s never affected me in a bad way. Drinking causes far more trouble and kills people, yet we allow alcohol consumption, so I’m all for making pot legal!

what about teens abusing alcohol is that any better than MJ because its leagal?
November 1st, 2009 at 6:30 am
its hard because i have friends who smoke and they want it legalized because it “helps” people. yet whenever i see someone standing in front of congress wanting it legalized they say they cant not smoke for 20 minutes. to me thats addiction, am i wrong? i can see how it helps people but i think people will abuse if it gets legalized.

I believe marijuana should be legalized and controlled in the same way alcohol is.
November 1st, 2009 at 7:22 am
I think that marijuana should be legalized for all purposes what-so-ever!
GO POTHEADS-FOREVER-
LOL
November 1st, 2009 at 7:52 am
I would rather see alcohol become illegal. Pot, to me is not nearly as dangerous.
November 1st, 2009 at 8:08 am
Think about it.,.,.only if alchahol can become illegal.,.,.
November 1st, 2009 at 9:07 am
they should legalize it because it will stop a lot of people from smoking it. A friend of mine quit drinking as soon as he turned 21 because he said the thrill was gone. He liked the thought of drinking illegally. Same thing with marijuana. If they legalize it, a lot of people will most likely stop because the thrill is gone. I dunno…I think pot is a stupid drug. Well, all drugs are stupid, I just hate potheads the most mainly because of how stupid they act and the fact that EVERYBODY smokes pot. It’s the new trend. Bisexuality was the trend 5 years ago, now it’s being a pothead. Mleh…if you really want to feel tired and lazy, don’t drink any caffeine and sit on your arse all day. You don’t need drugs to do that. Live in Austin. You’ll be lazy for the rest of your life.

I don’t know the answer to that. Some people will claim that they need it just to get it legally and sell it. That is what some people do with a lot of meds. Xanax, Codeine, Demerol, and the list could keep going. I think that people are going to get what they want when they want, at least with it being illegal, we can try to keep a handle on it.

commen sense will tell you that god put the herb here for a reason why not use it to its full potential!!
November 1st, 2009 at 11:28 am
yes it should be, alcohol is ALOT worse for you, and yet, its totally legal, the only reason its not legal is because the government cant tax it, coz people will grow it themselfs.
November 1st, 2009 at 12:24 pm
i think that pot is a wonderful appetite awaken-er, and it definitely helps with headaches and lack of sleep., i wouldn’t call it a gateway drug, cause if it is then cigarettes are too so my answer is yes legalize it don’t patronize it
November 1st, 2009 at 1:06 pm
If a perscription would be needed to obtain it, I don’t see a problem. Do all the people who say no realize how many teens abuse painkillers and other pharmies?

The amount of time and money spent on going after marijuana users is ridiculous. Youth shouldn’t be smoking cigarettes or using alcohol either , both are legal and both are abused by adolescents. Adolescents should have NOTHING to do with whether or not they legalize marijuana. Alchohol as far as i am concerned has destroyed way more people than any other drug out there. People drinking and driving, people shooting herion on a daily basis with their babies crawling around all alone. This question upsets me because anyone who has used marijuana knows that this drug does help people with insomnia, aids, arthritis, etc, etc. People can abuse morphine but you know what? SO WHAT? How about the people who suffer without it. The numbers that would be benefitted would FAR outweight those who abuse it. Silly question.
November 1st, 2009 at 1:50 pm
Yes, and should have been along time ago. Can you imagine the profit from the goverment on taxes? cigarettes are worse for you.
November 1st, 2009 at 2:27 pm
the government will never legalize marijuana for the simple reason that they can’t tax it. I mean they CAN, but its so easy to grow, all users would just have their own little garden.
November 1st, 2009 at 3:16 pm
Legalise it for recreational purposes as well.Tax it like they do alcohol and cancerettes. It’s your body.No I do not smoke it.

I think marijuana should be legalized and ALCOHOL should be made illegal. The only downfall to marijuana is it slows down reaction time, and somewhat makes people temporarily “dumb”. On the other hand, alcohol kills people every day. People die from alcohol poisoning, drunk driving, people are more likely to committ a murder or be violent while they are drunk, and alcohol just flat out makes you sick, even the next day. It is pretty much unheard of that someone gets violent after smoking marijuana, on the other hand, it is common for drunk people, such as bar fights or just drunken fights. Alcohol brings out the worst in people, while on the other hand, marijuana makes people chill out. So people are put in jail for having marijuana while people are let off all the time for DUIs. Does it make sense to you? Doesn’t make sense to me.

I believe it should….marijuana does less damage than a cigarette. alcohol & cigarettes if abused, can be lethal. If it’s used in a positive way to help somebody of COURSE it should be legal for that use.
November 1st, 2009 at 3:58 pm
I don’t know if you read yesterdays news, but alcohol is a way bigger problem with teens than pot. Also more dangerous in many ways.
November 1st, 2009 at 4:00 pm
“potential of abuse from teens”???????????? Hello, they already are abusing it, I know tons who are. Ya know, I always himmed and hawwed at that question, but you just throwing those few words in there has made up my mind. Sure, let’s make it easier to access so then many, many more of our youth can subject themselves to braindamage.
November 1st, 2009 at 4:41 pm
its only your opinion that it is a gateway drug, I’d say cigs and booze are more of a gateway drug then pot. A lot of cancer patients use it to keep up an appitiete, that is needed very much to fight the cancer. In fact, I think it should be legal for anyone over 21. A hundred years of pot use in this nation will never cause the destruction that one year of drinking booze causes
November 1st, 2009 at 5:39 pm
I hate to burst your bubble, but it’s already being used by teens. I also don’t believe that it’s a gateway drug, it’s so dissimilar from the other drugs. No one I know that’s smoked pot has turned to any of the harder drugs. So yes they should definitely legalize medicinal marijuana.

Kids are going to abuse marijuana whether it’s legal or not. If it’s legalized, I do think that they will be able to regulate it better though because they will have better control and oversight on the sources/producers. But then again, kids (and adults as well) are also known to abuse legal, prescription drugs. I don’t think there is a way to get rid of this problem. However, if there is firm, medically supported evidence that shows marijuana’s medicinal benefits, then I don’t see why they shouldn’t legalize it.
November 1st, 2009 at 6:11 pm
If it for medical purposes it would be by prescription only and just like any other medicine, you probably shouldn’t leave it just lying around. If someone is really needing the marijuana for medical purposes to alleviate pain and what not, I can’t imagine they would be willing to give it or sell it to anyone. Especially if they would have to still pay a co-pay just like with other medications. So yes, it should be legalized for medical purposes.
November 1st, 2009 at 7:01 pm
It is illegal right now…and kids abuse it. What do you think? Some states may legalize it for medical purposes, but federal law doesn’t recognize it.
And yes, it should be legal for medical conditions. I have MS and though it is in the early stages, the heat makes my hands shake like an old persons’ on occasion. Marijuana helps it. Also helps the pain I get in my legs. I’d rather do that than take god knows how may medications with who knows what in them.
“Stupid questions get stupid answers”…didn’t you learn that yet?

WELL, I FOUND SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTING ABOUT THIS…THAT’S GREAT..DID YOU KNOW THAT ALOT OF CANCER PATIENCE TAKE IT…AND SOME OF THE GUYS WHO HAVE LOSE LIMBS IN THE WARS TO SAVE THIS COUNTRY ARE ALLOWED IT TOO…I REALLY DON’T SEE HOW IT IS GOING TO AFFECT THE PUBLIC AS YOU SAY THE TEENAGERS…THERE ARE ALOT OF DRUGS OUT THERE AND IF THEY WANT THEM BAD ENOUGH THEY WILL FIND A WAY TO DO SO….IF.PEOPLE WANT IT BAD ENOUGH THEY CAN EVEN GET IT IN JAIL..THEY SOMEHOW CAN GET THRU THE GATES IN A PRISON..SO AS FAR AS IT BEING LEGALIZED I’M ALL FOR IT..PEOPLE IN THOSE SITUATIONS DESERVE TO BE OUT OF SOME OF THEIR PAIN……….THANKS FOR ASKING THAT QUESTION BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO VOICE MY OPINION…..THANKS AGAIN

It is already given to some terminal cancer patients, there are those with glaucoma who have a licence to grow and use their own. as a tea it can help settle a stomache, and it has been known to prevent asthma attacks as it opens up the airways, (as apposed to cigarette smoke wich causes the airway to close up)
There are more benefits to the drug than there are side effects, and as long as it were legal, just like any other tobacco like product it would be taxed, regulated, and sold in packs. (giving a guarentee on quality, and keeping it from becoming laced with dangerous drugs, this would put an end to “killer weed” )

Marijuana DOES have medicinal purposes. My Mom hasn’t had any complications from her liver disease from it, my Dad uses it for help with his glaucoma and my boyfriend and I both use it to help us with our chronic migraines. We don’t smoke it just to feel good, but to help us because we have health problems that only marijuana can treat. That is just a stupid rumor: it is not a gateway drug. My Mom has been smoking it for 30 years and never had the temptation to use ANY other kind of drug. My Dad, boyfriend and I haven’t done any other kinds of drugs either. It’s a scientific fact that tetrahydracannibonol, (THC) the resin crystals on the leaf base and buds at the peak of blooming that gets you high when smoked, really does have medicinal purposes. I don’t think it should be legalized to the general public, but only made available to those who need it for their ailments, like the laws already in California and Oregon. And I have never in all my life have ever heard a story about any REAL person that died because of marijuana, and neither has my Dad, and he was a teenager in the 60’s. My Mom grew up in the 70’s. My boyfriend may be 20, and I’m only 17, but I am positive that I will never try another drug, and so is my boyfriend.

It should be legalized, if it was, its doubtful that there would be so much trouble with youngsters smoking it?!
I dont see a problem with people smoking it. I would rather people smoke bud/weed/puff than to go out and get drunk…not many fights start with people that have sat smoking as to the fights that start between drunk people.
Its legal in amsterdam and they dont get half as many drug related crimes as we do (in the uk!) because its controlled over there, as well as the prositution etc.. u dont get the trouble with STD’s cos its also controlled there!
I say, Yep…legalize puff!!
People should open there eyes to what the youths are really taking because if they could see the truth about the drugs that are on the streets in every town, smoking puff would be so low on the list of parents worry’s as everything else would be before that!!
If it was legalized, half the teenagers that have tried it probably wouldnt have bothered if they were allowed to do it!
Apart fromthat, from medical views…it reduces muscular disorders…if you smoke it when pregnant!!

Legal or not legal, marijuana is used today by a number of teens (13-years-old to 19-years-old) and non-teens (everyone else). For law abiding teens and adults, however, legalization of marijuana for medical purposes will not present a problem or a temptation.
I do not believe that non-smokers will start smoking just because someone with a migraine decides to light up. People, not just teens, who want to smoke marijuana will find a way to do so, with or without the permission of the state.
We should review the lessons taught to us by Prohibition in the 1920’s.
So, to answer the question directly, I believe that marijuana should be legal for medical purposes, and legislated in all other cases in the same manner that alcohol is legislated.
