Can anyone suggest the best OTC drug to treat constipation after groin hernia surgery.?

By Editor

Question: I’ve stopped taking my pain killer. I’ve had constipation for two days now. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I’m personally a fan of psyllium husk. It’s a natural fiber. You can either take the capsules twice a day, or if it’s really bad, take them with every meal.

I have a lot of digestive issues, and it’s the one thing I’ve found that works well without cramps and bloating.

You could also try glycerin suppositories

Miralax is what my doctor told me to use when I had bad constipation from pain meds. It does take a couple days, but really worth it. Then take sennakot-S while taking meds o keep going.

Plain old epsom salts. Dissolve 1or 2 tsp in a glass of warm water.

7

Try Docusate Sodium. I used this while taking percocet after an abdominal surgery.

I assume you were taking an opiate like percocet or something. They can definitely clog you up. Get some Metamucil and Ducolax. The Metamucil will add bulk through fiber, the Ducolax is a stool softener. It will take about 12 hours to work, but it shouldn’t be violent. If you want something faster, get a bottle of magnesium citrate and hold on to your hat. It takes less than 6 hours but is rather powerful. Drink a lot of water.

I don’t recommend an OTC for constipation. I would have to know what you’re eating but what I would suggest is that you go to GNC and buy a product called “Super Fiber.” It has 6 grams of fiber per serving and it’s tasteless, unlike meta. I’m pre-med so I’m not the best source of info on the topic, but I also train and fight MMA. I use this product to shed my last 3 or 4 pounds before a weigh-in. If this doesn’t work I would talk to your doctor. Also I would eat Fiber-one bars. They don’t taste terrible and will help the Super-fiber. But don’t be mistaken, the Super Fiber should be enough.
