GPs don’t generally like to mess with psych meds…it’s not their specialty and they don’t really know much about the diagnoses and all that good stuff to help you out. Of COURSE they can rx anything for you but I would go to a real specialist and if your GP says no, you don’t need to, get a new GP as well as a good shrink. That’s my thought on this issue. Good luck and take care.

Some family physicians specialize in ADHD/ADD and do prescribe the medications but most family physicians have little training in ADHD/ADD so I would be a little leery of getting them to prescribe them.
Your best bet is to look in your phone book for doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists that deal with learning disorders and seek their diagnosis. Psychologists diagnose and handle behavorial therapy but cannot prescribe medications.

You might be able to…it just depends on how comfortable your family doc is with prescribing psych medications. Some family docs are okay with it, some are not. Just ask your family doctor if he/she can prescribe the medication; if he or she says no, ask for a referral to a psychiatrist. Sometimes family docs aren’t comfortable with prescribing psych meds (especially for something like ADD/ADHD) because they may not have received much psych training. Psychiatrists have had many years of training in psychiatry, so they are experts in the field. Find out with what your family doctor is comfortable with doing.

NO! THEY ALWAYS SEND YOU TO A SYC. FIRST THEN IF ITS JUST LIKE DEPRESSION MEDS OR ADHD MEDS THAN THE SYC WILL GIVE THE FAMILY DOC A LETTER TELLING THE DIAGNOSIS AND THE DOSAGE AND ACTUAL MEDS.
WHY I KNOW THIS…..

I had our physician take over my sons ADHD med management. No, a psychologist cannot prescribe any meds, but a psychiatrist can.
