Contacts are safe if you use them and wear them properly. You put them in, wear them no longer tahn 14 hours and take them out to sit in solution overnight, every night. Between 2 and 4 weeks, you throw them out and put in a new pair. Certain brands are more comfortable than others. Newer styles are safer than others. Our doctor has seen good results from the Acuvue Oasys brand. A lot of people say they are very comfortable, too. Putting them in is straight forward. taking them out is a matter of sliding the contact gently to the corner of your eye, and plucking it out. It's not as hard as it would seem. Your eye doctor should have you taught to do it. If not, try a different doctor.
