A local stray cat got his eye gouged out. Maybe from a fight? Do you think it will heal? I can’t catch him.

By Editor

Question: I saw him coming to my porch for food. I went out to greet him and saw his eye gouged out. He’s such a sweet cat. I tried to put him in a carrier and take him to the vet, but he got away. Now he may avoid me.I’ve been looking for him all day.

I’m concerned it will get infected and he’s in pain. Do you think a cat fight could have caused his eye to come out like that? Any chance he’ll heal naturally without medical care?

I’m so worried about the little buddy. I’m going to borrow a cat trap tomorrow. There’s several strays around though, so it may take days to get him. Anyone else seen a cat lose an eye and recover?

Aww, you’re so sweet. Maybe you should ask a vet. I hope you find him and make him yours!

Yes this can happen and heal. I lived on a farm with a lot of cats that were not tame. Some got pretty ruffed up and survived.

yes, i hope. this happened to a stray cat in my neighborhood when i was a kid. the cat lived a long time. it is really kind of you to be concerned with this cat. he’ll be fine but he’ll be better if you catch him and take him to a shelter.

Awww… Poor kitty… If you want to capture him put out your hand and let him come up and sniff it until it gets use to your scent.

This past summer an injured stray cat adopted us and it wouldn’t come near us. But when I put my hand out and let him approach, he accepted me.

I hope you can catch the poor thing.

Good Luck :)

Call the humane society in your area to catch him and examine his wound. they may be able to cure him.

I’m sure if he didn’t loose too much blood he’ll be fine. But you should take him to the vet soon or it might get infected, and I’m not so sure if he’d be able to recover as well from that. And yes, a cat fight or a run in with a dog could have caused it if it got messy.
You should call animal control though, for advice, because I’m sure they could tell you what kind of humane traps would catch the cat.

Good idea on the cat trap – stray cats get in fights frequently – the poor little guy is in pain I am sure – cats can live with one eye just like us humans. There are cat rescues you can call – explain the situation to them and they will come out and trap if you can’t catch him. Lots of pet lovers out there. I would entice him with some tuna fish. We have caught many a stray in a cat trap and found them homes. Good luck.

After you catch him, do you plan to take him to the local ASPCA?(no kill shelter). That place in addition to not killing him, will medically treat him and vaccinate him. Let the staff know you have the money and want to adopt him(if you want to keep him). The staff may say yes and put him on hold(if you can convince them).
The reason I said go this route, is vet care costs will be sky-high initially and subsequently for a cat in such bad shape. But that route is possible too.
If you go the ASPCA route, periodically check up on him, so the staff can be familiar with you.
Now, you said, healing naturally w/o medical care? Uh uhh, no way. Ive seen cats with missing eyes and open sores wind up with severe infections and maggot infestations, and they usually die of blood poisoning. No and s, ifs, or Buts, the cat needs medical attention.
Please heed this advice
